Thank you for your incredible support of the people in Bukono Nabuti, Uganda. We are so excited to bring you the final report for the poultry farming mill you have funded.
Before being given access to a miller, caregivers had to travel many miles in order to buy poultry feed. Now, they are able to buy feed in their own community, reducing cost and time. Caregivers have learned how to use the mill, and they now bring raw materials to turn into feed.
Progress
Since the last report, more caregivers and youth have been trained to use the mill. The center has increased the number of beneficiaries by 17 percent, and 100 caregivers are now trained to use the mill, with more learning every month. Many young people have also been trained and taught about microenterprising. They are practicing entrepreneurship skills, and have learned about proper feeding, the importance of feeding animals balanced diets, how to reduce costs of feed, and disease prevention.
Large Scale Outcomes
This mill has had an incredible effect on the people in this community. The caregivers are delighted to easily receive feeds for their chickens and pigs. The youth are able to support their caregivers through this work as well. These families now have the opportunity to earn over $1000 US per year — nearly six times the average Ugandan family’s income!
Objectives
One goal of this project was to reduce feed cost. By using local materials and milling the feed themselves, caregivers are able to make feed for about 60 percent of market cost, enabling many to have more chickens and other livestock. By managing costs, instead of keeping only 30 birds, many families are able to keep nearly 100 birds.
Spiritual Influence
Through the mill and the work of the local church, many families are learning God’s principles of stewardship. Through this platform, the staff of the church are able to evangelize and share the gospel of Jesus with the community. By providing the opportunity to provide for families, the church functions as a center of hope in the community. We are praying that God blesses the work of their hands and that the gospel influences and transforms lives.
From Derek Mude — a Father in Uganda
“I was facing a lot of financial challenges, and it was difficult to look after my children. I want to provide for their dreams and future, but I was not able to provide for my son’s courses. Through the income-generation skills, I now rear 100 birds and no longer have to travel more than 30km to get feed. I am able to take care of his needs without borrowing money.
I know that the center wishes us well because of how they have supported us and trained us. We solve poverty related problems by working hard at opportunities that come our way.”
A Transformed Community
Derek isn’t the only one learning to work hard and provide for those around him. Alice, age 12, with her mother’s guidance, has learned to raise chickens, and now helps provide for her family by selling the eggs and other small items. She is growing up with hope for a better life.
Your support not only provides chicken feed to poultry farmers — it also changes communities, families and lives. It brings hope that Jesus has a better plan for them. It enables mothers and fathers to provide for their children. It allows people like Derek to see fruit from their labor and live out their God-given purpose. It gives the church an opportunity to provide tangible hope and share the gospel with the community.
