Although Compassion is not a disaster relief organization, in order to provide holistic care for children, it is often necessary to offer a quick response to emergency situations. In a crisis, staff and volunteers work diligently and creatively to address immediate needs and to help vulnerable children and their families recovery.
Recent efforts have included providing -
- Nutritional support and skills training to address the current global food crisis.
- Emergency shelter following the earthquake in Haiti, 2021.
- Food and hygiene supplies during the pandemic.
- Targeted educational support during the pandemic.
Compassion's approach to disaster response is typically two-fold: First, stabilize families by meeting their short-term needs. Second, walk alongside families, engaging them in long-term solutions for greater self-sufficiency. Compassion relies on staff at its church partners to identify the appropriate steps for the context.
