ACK St. Paul’s Wandeche Church Survival Update | Spring 2021

June 8, 2021

Pictured above: A Survival Specialist visits a family with twin daughters, Jiane and Rihana. The parents learn how to monitor their children’s height and weight at home to ensure they are growing healthy according to their age.

Since the pandemic began to impact Kenya, many individuals lost their sources of income. Your support of Survival at ACK St. Paul’s Wandeche Church is not only helping caregivers receive essential supplies during the pandemic, but it is empowering and equipping them to become economically self-sufficient. Caregivers are learning income-generating skills through the Survival program, which helps maintain their sources of income in an unstable economy. Through group sessions and home visits, caregivers and babies are also receiving holistic care to ensure they are known, loved and protected. Thank you for joining Compassion in supporting Survival efforts in Kenya.

Survival Statistics at ACK St. Paul’s Church (July – December 2020)
27 Babies and their mothers served
5 Compassion-assisted births occurred
80% of babies born at normal weight
1 baby, on average per month, treated for malnutrition

Recent Survival Activities

Ruth, an expecting mother in the program, goes through a booklet with her husband and a Survival staff member during a home visit. They discuss the importance of monitoring a mother’s health during pregnancy.

A mother sells mandazi and sugarcane after taking an entrepreneurship and business idea course through the Survival program. Mandazi is a type of fried bread and a traditional Swahili dish.

A Letter of Gratitude from Everline

Greetings in the name of Jesus Christ,

My name is Everline, and I am a mother of twins. Their names are Gerida and Gift. I was registered in the Survival program when I was pregnant. Both my husband and I have benefited from the teachings given through the empowerment program at the center. I learned about the importance of attending prenatal appointments at the clinic while pregnant and postnatal appointments after delivering my babies. Because of the lessons on infant and young child nutrition, I am able to breastfeed my two children well. My children are walking and can even play around with objects.

As a family, we are able to raise some chickens and sell them as an income-generating activity. I also learned how to make floor mats through the center, and now I sell those, too. At the center, we also learn about environmental conservation and are encouraged to plant trees that will not destroy our environment. My husband and I were given some trees to plant, and they are growing well.

Please pray for my children that they will grow to be healthy and God-fearing. Please also pray for my poultry business. Thank you very much for the support, and may God bless you!

Yours faithfully,

Everline
