Showing Compassion in Tanzania
Compassion has been partnering with local churches in Tanzania since 1999. Tanzania is located in East Africa and is home to Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, and the wildlife-teeming plains of Serengeti National Park. The country is rich in indigenous tribes, such as the Maasai people, with unique cultures and traditions. Most families rely on agriculture for their livelihood, as 66% of all employment is in the agriculture sector. The incidence of extreme poverty nearly halved from 84 percent in 2000 to 45 percent in 2011, but since then, poverty reduction has stagnated. Currently, more than 114,000 children are benefiting from Compassion’s whole-child development programming.

Poverty in Tanzania
- 44.9% of the population lives below the international poverty line of $2.15 per day.

- 12% of people in Tanzania are using surface water, and 11% are using unimproved drinking water sources.
- 22% of women (ages 20-24) gave birth before age 18.
Compassion is working to bring hope for a brighter future to children and families in Tanzania. Our Frontline Church Partners are addressing children’s physical, economic, socio-emotional and spiritual needs.
