Survival Program: The Start of a Brighter Future
The first few years of life, beginning with pregnancy, are crucial for the healthy, long-term development of babies. During this time, small investments in key areas can mean the difference between life and death. Health initiatives such as improving caregiver nutrition during pregnancy and the promotion of breastfeeding lead to healthier babies, while the right toys and activities can stimulate better cognitive and physical development. And even minor improvements in a caregiver’s education can lead to a dramatic reduction in infant and child mortality.
Starting early is critical when it comes to releasing children from poverty in Jesus’ name. When Compassion’s local church partners can offer support at the earliest moment in a child’s life, their opportunities to thrive and live a healthy life multiply. That’s why Compassion’s Survival program concentrates on serving the most vulnerable mothers in poverty, supporting them through their pregnancy and birth, and helping their babies reach their crucial first birthday — a significant obstacle in developing nations.
Through partnership with local churches, these efforts have saved and improved the lives of thousands of mothers and their babies in need. They provide important services such as:
One-to-one care from a Survival Specialist
- Basic nutrition and vitamins
- Prenatal and postnatal care
- Skilled birth attendants
- Immunization
- Breastfeeding support and instruction
- Regular growth monitoring
- Supplemental food
- Spiritual guidance and support
