Building a Brighter Future for Children in Peru

A Proposal for Lenexa Baptist Church to Provide Electricity, Classrooms and a Playground for the Baptist Church of Marcavelica - Palmeras in Piura, Peru

We are deeply grateful for the Lenexa Baptist Church family and your heart for the world's most vulnerable children. Because of your concern for those Jesus referred to as "the least of these," it is our honor to present you with the following proposal to invest in building new infrastructure at the newly planted Baptist Church of Marcavelica - Palmeras in Piura, Peru.

Meeting a Critical Need

Inadequate learning facilities create a noisy, uncomfortable and dangerous environment – preventing children from reaching their full God-given potential. The Las Palmeras community, where the Baptist Church of Marcavelica - Palmeras ministers, is currently struggling with this challenge. This community of 8,500 people has an average household income of $278 per month. The neighborhood is an area with many challenges, including malnutrition, illiteracy and water-borne illnesses.

Currently, the church ministers to 220 children and their families in Las Palmeras. The community is affected by a lack of electricity since the electric company has few distribution networks. The church is temporarily supported by a neighbor who provides them with electricity. However, the church needs its own electrical installation to continue their activities.

The church desires to install electricity, build at least one classroom and playground, and purchase chairs and a sound system to improve its outreach. The cost of infrastructure improvements is $13,078.09 and the cost to purchase and install a playground is $13,054.56.

It is expected that the children and their families will be motivated to attend activities here because of the quality and comfort of the new space. As a result, they will have increased opportunity to succeed in school, as well as hear and learn about God.

Amount Needed: $26,132.65

Partnership Summary

The overall objective of this work is to increase the center’s ability to implement Compassion’s holistic child developmental activities through constructing quality facilities.

Specific objectives of this intervention include:

  • Construct at least one classroom and a playground
  • Install electricity
  • Purchase chairs and a sound system
  • Increase children’s motivation to attend program activities in the new space
  • Improve children's school performance through increased use of the facilities
  • To provide children a safe and fun area to play and encourage their attendance at the center

Your investment of $26,132.65 will be used for materials and labor for construction. The church will organize a construction committee to provide leadership and oversight of the activity, create a building schedule and hire a professional to provide blueprints. They will also host a celebration for the community when the new environment is ready for use. Once fully funded, construction is expected to take approximately three months, with a completion report submitted from the field within two months after that.

Three distinct foundations of how Compassion works:

We focus exclusively on children — “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” (Luke 18:16, NIV) All programs are aligned with developing children holistically (pre-natal through young adulthood) by addressing physical, spiritual, socio-emotional, economic and educational needs.

We work exclusively with the local church — Compassion believes that the church is God’s agent for change in a broken world, which is why our programs are only offered through partnership with churches in the developing world that have the same passion for prioritizing and ministering to children.

We keep Jesus at the center of all we do — Children and families are not required to profess Jesus as their Savior to participate in our programs, but we want children to hear the gospel, see living faith and be discipled in the ways of Jesus. To this end, every mother and child registered in our programs receive age-appropriate Bibles, which are replaced as children mature and develop.
